Hospital Guide in China
Everything you need to know as a foreign patient visiting hospitals in China — from finding the right facility to booking appointments and understanding what to expect.
How Do Hospitals in China Work?
China has a three-tier hospital system: primary care at community health centers, secondary care at regional hospitals, and tertiary care at large specialist hospitals in major cities.
For international patients, tertiary hospitals (三甲医院, Grade A Level 3) in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen are the best choice. These hospitals have:
- Specialists with extensive experience
- English-speaking staff or interpretation services
- International patient departments
- Modern medical equipment
Unlike in some countries, China's top hospitals often have the most advanced equipment and doctors who treat extremely high volumes of patients, giving them exceptional expertise.
What to Consider When Choosing a Hospital
Location
Consider proximity to your accommodation. Major hospitals have multiple locations — check if they have a branch closer to where you're staying.
Your Condition
Different hospitals excel in different specialties. A general hospital is fine for common conditions; complex cases may need a specialized hospital.
Language Support
Ask if the hospital has English-speaking doctors or interpretation services. Some hospitals have dedicated international patient coordinators.
Insurance & Payment
Check if the hospital accepts your insurance directly. If not, you'll need to pay out-of-pocket and claim reimbursement later.
How to Book an Appointment
Through the Hospital's App or WeChat
Most major hospitals have their own app or WeChat mini-program for booking. Search for the hospital name in Chinese characters.
Through a Medical Tourism Agency
Agencies can help with appointment booking, translation, airport pickup, and even treatment plans. Many offer free consultation.
Walk-in for Emergencies
For urgent care, you can walk into any hospital's emergency department. For specialized outpatient care, booking is recommended.
What to Bring to the Hospital
- Passport
Required for all foreign patients at registration
- Previous Medical Records
In English or translated Chinese — diagnosis, treatment history, medications
- Insurance Documents
Insurance card, policy details, and any guarantee of payment letters
- Payment Method
