Communication in China
What you need to know about staying connected in China — SIM cards, internet access, messaging apps, and translation tools.
The Reality of Connectivity in China
China has limited access to some international websites and apps. Google, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Twitter are not accessible without a VPN.
However, China has its own excellent alternatives: WeChat (messaging + payments + everything), WeChat Pay / Alipay (mobile payments), and Baidu (search engine).
Essential Communication Tools
Get a Chinese SIM Card
You'll need a Chinese phone number for many services — WeChat registration, food delivery, ride-hailing. Buy a SIM card at the airport (bring your passport) or at telecom shops.
Providers:
China Mobile (中国移动) — largest network
China Unicom (中国联通) — good for foreigners
China Telecom (中国电信) — strong in some areas
VPN — Your Gateway to the World
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is essential if you need access to blocked websites or apps. Subscribe and install before arriving in China — you cannot download most VPN apps once here.
Note: VPNs can be slow and unreliable. Free VPNs are not recommended — they're slow and may be unsafe.
WeChat — Your All-in-One App
WeChat (微信) is used for everything: messaging, payments, ride-hailing (Didi), food delivery, making reservations. International phone numbers can now register for WeChat.
WeChat Features You'll Use:
- • Chat with hotels, hospitals, restaurants
- • WeChat Pay for mobile payments
- • Didi ride-hailing (look for "打车")
- • Mini-programs for services
