Getting Around China

How to navigate China's transportation system — from metro and high-speed trains to ride-hailing apps and airport transfers.

Transportation Options in China

High-Speed Trains (高铁)

China's high-speed rail network is the world's largest. Trains reach 250-350 km/h and connect all major cities. Book via WeChat, Alipay, or the 12306 app.

  2. 2. Choose ride type (Economy, Taxi, Premium)
  3. 3. Pay via linked card or WeChat Pay

Major cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen) have extensive metro networks. Fast, cheap, and English signage in central stations.

Practical Tips for Medical Tourists

🏥 Hospital Visits

Major hospitals are often crowded. Plan extra travel time and consider going during off-peak hours (early morning or after 2pm).

✈️ Airport Transfers

Airport express metro lines connect to city centers. Didi is usually cheaper than taxis for airport pickup. Pre-book if possible.

🗺️ Navigation

Use Baidu Maps (works in China) or Google Maps (needs VPN). Enter addresses in Chinese characters for best results.

💳 Payment

Link your credit card to Didi or use WeChat/Alipay. Most taxis and rides accept both cash and mobile payments.

Important Things to Know

  • Traffic is chaotic

Roads are busy. Traffic jams are common in major cities, especially during rush hour (7:30-9:30am and 5:00-7:30pm).

  • Crosswalks matter

Jaywalking is common but stay alert. Vehicles don't always stop at crosswalks.

  • Save addresses in Chinese

Always have your destination address written in Chinese characters on your phone to show taxi drivers.
